Motorists will soon be able to use Lilian Ngoyi street, formerly known as Bree Street. This comes after the city announced that it has completed phase one of the rehabilitation process.
“Join Executive Mayor Cllr. Dada Morero as we celebrate the phase one completion and the start of phase two of Lilian Ngoyi (formerly Bree) Street,” read a statement on the City of Joburg’s official Facebook page.
The celebration will take place at Corner Lilian Ngoyi and City Hall street on Monday and starts at 10:30.
The development comes years after the street in the city centre was closed due to an underground explosion that occurred in July 2023 leaving one person dead and over 40 people injured.
The closure affected the city's traffic. However, judging by the process that is being made on the project, motorists could regain access to the street as early as January 2026.
The city has been engaged in the rehabilitation plan since 20 February 2024.
The first phase focused on the reconstruction of underground services - reinforcing the concrete channel and installing street furniture.
The second phase which is expected to be completed by December 2025 will involve the rejuvenation of Lillian Ngoyi including paving and placement of street furniture in alignment with the City’s transit mall vision.
The cost of the rehabilitation is reportedly R192-million.
