Johannesburg will soon welcome a new mega 'city'.

The Bankenveld District City (BDC) is an R18-billion infrastructure project located just off the Marlboro off-ramp, close to Sandton.

The new 'city' is a joint partnership between Calgro M3 and Momentum-owned Eris Property Fund.

According to Business Tech, the infrastructure project will cost in the region of R18-billion.

Construction has started and soon consumers will be able to purchase property, access health care facilities, shop at a large shopping centre and rent out commercial spaces within the 'city'.

According to Emerging Real Estate Digest, 'the project is aimed at delivering between 20,000 and 30,000 housing units, with prices ranging from about R500,000 to R1.5-million'.

The project in its entirety is expected to provide a large number of jobs and stimulate the economy.

The 'city' will be easily accessible. It is close to OR Tambo and Lanseria airports, Gautrain Marlboro Station, as well as BRT and bus routes.

According to Eris Property Group's website, the key features of BDC include:

  • World-class logistics and warehousing facilities
  • Turnkey development packages
  • Facilities from 5,000m² upwards
  • Mixed-use development, including commercial, retail and residential
  • Designed and built to make a positive environmental and societal impact
