There’s something undeniably magical about a total lunar eclipse, the moon slowly disappearing into the Earth’s shadow, the sky turning a deep, coppery red, and that quiet, collective awe as everyone stops to look up. And lucky for Joburgers, this celestial show is visible right from our city skies this weekend.

When to look up

The total lunar eclipse, also known as a "Blood Moon," will be fully visible over Johannesburg on Sunday, September 7, 2025. The “Blood Moon” effect will be at its most dramatic between 7:30 PM and 8:52 PM, with the peak at 8:11 PM. The partial and total phases will be fully visible from the city, making it the perfect night to catch the moon in all its red-hued glory.

This striking effect happens when Earth slips directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface. As sunlight filters through our atmosphere, blue light scatters while red light bends and refracts onto the Moon, giving it that unforgettable crimson hue.

Since Johannesburg has significant light pollution, the best viewing locations are those with a high elevation or that are away from the city's bright lights.

  • Melville Koppies: For panoramic views and minimal light pollution, the koppies in Melville are ideal.
  • Kensington Ridge (Scottish Horse War Memorial): Known for its panoramic views of the city, this location offers a high-up vantage point to avoid light obstruction.
  • The Cradle of Humankind: For those willing to travel a bit further, the rural areas around the Cradle of Humankind offer darker skies and a more pristine stargazing experience.
  • Heidelberg area: Located to the south of Johannesburg, the farmland areas around Heidelberg provide a clear view away from urban light pollution.
  • From your own balcony or rooftop: Honestly, Joburg’s skyline makes for an epic vantage point. Just make sure to get somewhere with a clear view of the sky, away from streetlights.

Time Out Tip: Make the Blood Moon a social occasion if you're heading to one of Joburg’s open-air spots. Grab your friends, pack some snacks and make an evening of it. Watching the eclipse together isn’t just safer, it’s way more fun (and who doesn’t want a group selfie under a red moon?).

Tips for viewing the Blood Moon

  • No equipment needed: You don’t need special glasses for a lunar eclipse (that’s only for solar eclipses!). While binoculars or a telescope can offer a closer look, they are not necessary to enjoy the spectacle.
  • Find a clear view: Choose a spot with a clear, unobstructed view to the east, as the Moon will be rising in that direction during the early phases.

  • Check the weather: Clouds can obstruct the view, so be sure to check the weather forecast for the evening of September 7th.

  • Bring a camera: For those interested in astrophotography, a tripod and a good camera with a zoom lens (200mm or more) are recommended for capturing the best shots.

Whether you’re catching it solo or making a night of it with friends, the total lunar eclipse is a perfect excuse to slow down and marvel at the universe. And in a city like Joburg, moments like this are rare reminders that the cosmos is just as dazzling as our urban playground.
