Free Wi-Fi for all! Over the past few years, the City of Johannesburg has been rolling out free public Wi-Fi in various communities as part of efforts to make internet access more accessible to residents.
Being connected to free Wi-Fi means people do not have to spend money on mobile data, which can often be costly. It also allows residents to stay informed about what is happening around the world, search for job opportunities, access educational resources and stay connected with others.
In its latest initiative, the city has extended free Wi-Fi access to Slovo Park, an informal settlement south of Johannesburg. Over the weekend, MMC for Transport, Cllr Kenny Kunene, and MMC for Human Settlements, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, launched the Smart Pole Project on Mpumelelo Street, marking what many see as another important step toward improving digital access for communities that may not always be able to afford internet services.
The initiative forms part of the city's broader vision of creating a more digitally connected Johannesburg, where residents from all backgrounds can access online resources without financial barriers.
The project comes with the following benefits:
High-speed 4G and 5G connectivity with free public Wi-Fi access
Energy-efficient LED smart lighting
Integrated CCTV surveillance to enhance public safety,
An emergency panic-button system linked to response units.
"With the activation of these smart poles, residents will experience improved visibility at night, enhanced safety measures and greater access to online government services, educational platforms and communication tools. Our goal is to ensure that no community is left behind in the digital age," Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport Cllr Kenny Kunene said.
For residents, this means more people can now meet the basic need of being connected in today's digital world. It also highlights Johannesburg's commitment to building a city that prioritises digital inclusion and opportunities for its citizens.
