Curious about Hillbrow? Want to trace the hidden river beneath the city streets or explore Soweto’s township creativity with locals who know it best? This year’s #JoziMyJoziWalks are your chance to discover Johannesburg walking tours that connect neighbourhood stories, culture, and history, one step at a time.

What is JoziMyJoziWalks?

The walking festival returns on World Tourism Day (27 September) and will run across the weekend of 27 and 28 September 2025. The event is all about uncovering the stories, culture, art, and food that make the city’s neighbourhoods so vibrant.

These guided tours are a safe, engaging, and intimate way to explore Johannesburg on foot. They are led by community champions, activists, entrepreneurs, artists, and heritage experts. Expect a mix of iconic landmarks, buzzing cultural hubs, natural escapes, and off-the-beaten-path treasures.

Why walking tours are the best way to explore Johannesburg

Walking tourism is one of the fastest-growing global trends, offering low-impact, sustainable, and deeply personal experiences. These walks directly support small businesses, local guides, and communities, while encouraging exploration at a pace that allows for real connections.

Safety and accessibility are also key. Jozi My Jozi has been working with partners to restore walkable city networks by installing solar lighting, CCTV cameras, and improved pavements. The revitalised Nelson Mandela Bridge is one shining example of how these efforts are paying off.

Neighbourhoods featured in JoziMyJoziWalks 2025

Of more than 40 applications, 15 guided walks have been curated for the 2025 edition. Each uniquely celebrates local identity, from art and heritage to food and hidden businesses. Neighbourhoods in the spotlight this year include:

  • Alexandra
  • Braamfontein & Braamfontein Werf
  • Brixton
  • Fordsburg
  • Inner City
  • Kwa Mai Mai Market and Jeppestown
  • Kensington
  • Lorentzville
  • Melville
  • Soweto

Every route is designed and led by locals who know exactly where to find hidden gems and bring their own stories and insights to the experience.

How to join a walking tour in Johannesburg

Places are limited to keep the experiences personal and meaningful. Tickets cost R67.50 per walk (including the Quicket fee) and are available via Quicket.

“What makes these walks special is that they are rooted in the lived experiences of the Walk Champions themselves,” says Dawn Robertson, Visitor and Creative Economy Catalyst for Jozi My Jozi. “Visitors will leave with more than just new knowledge; they’ll carry the feelings, connections, and community spirit that make this city unforgettable.”
