Dubai flight chaos: O.R. Tambo travellers warned to stay away as airspace closes

But as of March 1, 2026, that "super-hub" link has been severed. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed major disruptions following the closure of the UAE airspace, with O.R. Tambo at the centre of the storm.

Why does this hit Johannesburg hardest?

The Johannesburg-Dubai route is a powerhouse of South African travel. To put the scale of this disruption into perspective:

• The Frequency: Emirates typically operates 4 direct daily flights from O.R. Tambo alone (that’s 28 flights a week!).
• The Volume: With the recent introduction of the second daily A380 service, these flights move thousands of Joburgers every single day.
• The Impact: As of today, O.R. Tambo has reported 8 total cancellations related to the Middle East—the highest number of any airport in the country.

The stay-at-home advisory

In a move to prevent chaos at the airport, ACSA is urging travellers not to go to O.R. Tambo until they have a confirmed flight status.

"Travellers are strongly advised not to proceed to airport precincts until they have confirmed their flight status directly with their respective airlines," ACSA stated in their official alert.
