Lanseria International Airport is getting an upgrade to ensure travellers can get a better experience.
The airport aims to expand capacity and boost services.
Speaking to Time Out, Nomasiko Paarehwa, the airport's PR and Communications Manager, says some changes have already started.
"We did the multi-storey parking, and it was opened in 2019. That is an old project we completed before COVID-19," said Paarehwa.
She says the airport has embarked on a new infrastructure development project.
"We are expanding other parts of the airport," said Paarehwa.
Some changes include an upgrade to the general aviation terminal and the cargo precinct.
"We are also building an FB0; a general aviation terminal that takes care of all the general aviation, both international and domestic," says Paarehwa.
She says the airport will also include a maintenance and repair facility (MRO).
"The airlines can now come and do their maintenance and repair at Lanseria. It's another way to attract the airlines and bring them to come and fly from here. We will have the facility to maintain their planes right here on the premises."
The airport is also upgrading its runway so that it can take larger aircraft.
"We have the upgrading of the Alpha Taxiway. Our Alpha Taxiway can take code C planes. We are upgrading it to take Code E. Currently, we are limited with the wind span that we can take, so with the upgrading of the taxiway, we can take larger aircraft which have got a bigger wing span."
She says the modification will allow the airport to handle Code E aircraft, which are the largest planes.
"What all these changes mean is we are able to bring in more airlines. We are able to open up more routes because if bigger planes are able to land at Lanseria, it means we can now do routes which are even further out."
"We are going to start attracting more airlines and opening more routes, which means Lanseria becomes a one-stop shop," Nomasiko Paarehwa.
Lanseria International Airport is located at Airport Road, Lanseria, in Johannesburg. It is reportedly the fourth-largest airport in South Africa by passenger numbers.
