Travellers planning to fly into Johannesburg via Cape Town International Airport may need to delay or reconsider their travel plans following a fire incident at the airport on Tuesday.
The blaze caused significant disruptions, leading to delays and several flight cancellations. The airport, a central hub connecting Cape Town with destinations across South Africa and the world, is frequently used by thousands of passengers travelling to and from Johannesburg.
"Cape Town International Airport confirms that a fire occurred on the landside of the airport," Cape Town International Airport said in a statement posted on social media.
While the news came as a shock to many travellers, authorities have confirmed that the fire has been successfully extinguished and no injuries were reported.
"All passengers, staff, and visitors are safe. Passenger safety remains our highest priority," the airport said in a statement.
Some flights have been placed on hold to allow for operational checks and to ensure services resume smoothly. Passengers travelling between Johannesburg and Cape Town, or those connecting through the airport to other destinations, are advised to monitor updates from their airlines before heading to the airport.
Travellers are also encouraged to remain patient as officials work to restore normal operations. The airport added that further information will be shared as it becomes available and thanked passengers for their patience and cooperation during the disruption.
