Travellers flying from OR Tambo and other airports to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) have been warned of flight disruptions.

The airport announced that flights to and from KMIA have been suspended after the Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) failed to meet the deadlines necessary to maintain the validity of instrument flight procedures.

"Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) regrets to confirm the severe disruption of scheduled airline services to and from the
airport," the airport announced on Facebook on Monday, 20 October.

"The disruptions are due to the failure of South Africa's Air Traffic Navigation Services (ATNS) to meet the deadlines required to maintain the validity of instrument flight procedures (IFPs). This has resulted in the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) initiating the suspension of these procedures. KMIA airside infrastructure, lighting, and instrument landing systems (ILS) are in calibrated working order and fully serviceable."

The airport added that it remains committed to maintaining the highest safety and operational standards, reassuring passengers that the issue lies outside its control.

"KMIA prides itself on maintaining infrastructure and instrumentation at a very high standard and continues to meet audit requirements expected of it. The suspension of the instrument flight procedures (IFPs) by ATNS is not due to any non-compliance by KMIA. As such, KMIA and our airline partners eagerly await for ATNS to resolve the matter and gain the necessary procedure approvals from the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) that is required of them. We will continue to work closely with our airline partners to limit the disruption and communicate effectively with all passengers moving through KMIA where possible."

The disruptions, which began last week, have left many passengers stranded and forced to cancel their flights. The airport has been sharing updated flight schedules here.

Travellers are encouraged to contact their airlines for updates on how their flights may be affected.

"If you are travelling over the coming days, please continue to check your flight status directly with your Airline or via our arrivals and departures page on our website and stay tuned to our page for any further updates," KMIA wrote on Facebook.

Weather disruptions
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) informed Time Out Johannesburg that some flights from OR Tambo were cancelled over the weekend due to adverse weather conditions.
"Airlink cancelled some flights on October 17, 19, and 20 that were scheduled to operate the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) route from O. R. Tambo International Airport," ACSA said in a statement.
"FlySafair experienced cancellations on Friday, October 17, and Sunday, October 19. All cancellations were due to weather-related conditions," the statement said.
