Here are tips to make your airport experience far less stressful.

It’s the busiest time of the year, and thousands of people will be heading to different destinations - visiting family, going on holiday or jetting off to festive getaways. Airports are especially packed at this time, and without a proper understanding of how everything works, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
Unlike regular public transport, flights operate differently. Even if your flight is booked for a specific time, you can’t simply arrive at the airport and walk straight in.
Here are some helpful tips to make your airport journey smoother this festive season:
Most airlines open check-in 24 hours before departure. Once checked in, pay attention to your boarding time and try not to leave it too late to go to the gate — festive-season queues can move slowly. Better early than rushed.
Airports are big and often have multiple terminals, gates and entrances. Do some research beforehand and take note of the correct drop-off point and gate for your airline.
Even with online check-in, your luggage may still need to be dropped off at the counter. Ensure your bags don’t exceed weight limits and that you aren’t packing prohibited items in your carry-on.
Local flights typically require arriving two hours before departure, and international flights require three hours before departure. But during the festive season, airports are even busier, so consider arriving a little earlier than usual.
You can’t fly without documents such as your ID, passport or visa. Keep them readily accessible - don’t bury them deep inside your luggage. If you are travelling with kids, remember to pack their unabridged birth certificates and consent letters from the parent who may not be travelling with you.
Use a bag or travel wallet that allows you easy access to important documents, gadgets and other essentials. Please note that certain items are not permitted in your checked baggage. This includes items such as lighters, firearms, and explosives.
Security may require you to remove jewellery, jackets and even shoes. Wear something comfortable and easy to slip on and off.
Know exactly which gate you’re departing from and keep checking the screens for updates. Also, allow yourself enough time to reach the boarding gates to avoid long queues.
Gates sometimes change, and updates are often made over airport speakers. Once you’re checked in, keep an ear out for any changes in flight schedules or boarding instructions.
