Johannesburg commuters will soon have another transport option as Gautrain expands its offerings to include an e-hailing service.

The public transport service recently announced that its management agency, GMA, is working on introducing an on-demand transport solution called Gau Express. The service aims to help customers travel to and from Gautrain stations with greater ease.

Like other e-hailing platforms, Gau Express will operate through an app, allowing commuters to connect with drivers in real time and travel directly to their nearest station or destination.

According to a statement released by GMA, the initiative is intended to 'address gaps identified in its feeder and distribution services', particularly for commuters travelling between stations and surrounding areas.

Currently, many Gautrain users rely on the Gautrain buses and other transport options to complete their journeys. While the new service has not officially launched yet, Gautrain says the completed rollout is expected to offer commuters a more reliable and convenient way to connect to the rail network.

For people living in and around Johannesburg who use the Gautrain regularly, the launch is welcome news. Convenience remains a top priority in a fast-paced province like Gauteng, where many commuters constantly balance busy schedules and travel.

It will also be interesting to see whether Gau Express offers a more affordable alternative compared with traditional e-hailing platforms already operating in the province.

The upcoming rollout adds to the growing number of transport options available in Johannesburg. In December last year, another South African-owned e-hailing platform, Secure Cab, launched in Johannesburg with fares starting from R50.

With more transport options entering the market, commuters across Gauteng may soon have greater flexibility in choosing services that best suit their schedules, budgets and travel needs.
