Johannesburg is officially in its plant era. From leafy Monsteras in Maboneng lofts to succulents soaking up sun on student windowsills, Joburgers are embracing a new kind of family member, one that doesn’t need walking, feeding, or Wi-Fi. Welcome to the age of plant parenting.

What began as a lockdown hobby has taken root as a full-on lifestyle. “What used to be just a Monstera in the corner and maybe an orchid on a table has turned into a love affair with both indoor jungles and flourishing outdoor gardens,” says plant stylist Nkhensani Rikhotso. “Whether it’s a balcony of herbs, a courtyard of succulents, or an indoor jungle of Monstera, nurturing green life — inside or out — has become the simplest way to grow happiness.”

It’s easy to see why. Science tells us that plants reduce stress, boost focus, and even clean the air. But beyond that, caring for something green has become a quiet act of mindfulness in a fast-paced city. “When I water my plants on a Saturday, that’s my quiet time,” says Rikhotso. “It forces me to slow down and be present. I can even tell when I’m not in a good headspace; my plants reflect that. They droop when I do.”

And it’s not just seasoned gardeners getting involved. From first-time plant parents to collectors of rare species, Joburg’s green generation is diverse and thriving. “I get messages from varsity students asking what plant is best for their desk, and I’ve got clients in their forties building full indoor gardens. It’s truly across the board,” Rikhotso adds.

Where to get inspired: The Houghton Bonsai, Succulent & Plant Show

If you’re ready to join the green revolution (or want an excuse to add one more plant to your collection), the Houghton Bonsai, Succulent & Plant Show at Killarney Mall is where you’ll want to be this November. Running from the 7th to the 9th, 2025, the show brings together hobbyists, experts, and curious beginners for three days of plant shopping bliss.

Beyond the exhibits, there’s plenty to experience. This year’s lineup includes interactive workshops and live demonstrations hosted by plant experts eager to share their secrets, from the art of bonsai styling to the best propagation tips for beginners. And if your bonsai is looking a little worse for wear, head to the Free Bonsai Hospital, where the legendary Tommy Ramiah, The Bonsai Guru, will be offering complimentary check-ups, pruning, and repotting advice.

Adding to the magic, visitors can browse to the sounds of live grand piano performances, enjoy artisanal deli stalls, and even bring the little ones along for kids’ workshops and a fun zone designed to spark their love of nature.

Entry is free, and there are even prizes up for grabs for those who get involved in the show’s exciting competitions.

So whether you’re nurturing a single succulent on your windowsill or building your own indoor jungle, it’s clear: Joburg’s love affair with plants is here to stay. And with events like the Houghton Bonsai, Succulent & Plant Show, there’s never been a better time to dig in, literally.
