South Africans love adventure, but let’s be real, nobody wants to break the bank doing it. In a recent study, the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA) found that over 30% of local adventure travellers spend under R500 per person per day.

Even on a budget, people are still hitting the road for a mix of relaxation, family time, and adventure. When it comes to accommodation, self-catering spots and B&Bs are the favourites, with value for money often guiding the choice.

“South Africans are adventure-hungry but budget-conscious,” says Flight Centre South Africa General Manager Antoinette Turner.

That’s where Flight Centre’s "R500aday Challenge" comes in, helping weekend warriors enjoy epic experiences around Johannesburg without overspending.

What’s the "R500aday Challenge"?

The R500 a Day Challenge is all about proving you don’t need to spend a fortune to have an epic weekend. Focused on microadventures, these 48-hour itineraries highlight free or low-cost activities, with one memorable paid experience to make the trip shine.

Tips for making the most of the R500 a Day Challenge

  • Plan your route smartly: Stick to destinations within 2–3 hours of Johannesburg to save on fuel and maximise your adventure. Map out hiking trails, scenic lookouts, and tidal pools along the way.

  • Bundle and save: Look for accommodation packages with breakfast or value-added activities. Pick one headline paid activity and fill the rest of your itinerary with free experiences.

  • Pack smart: Bring snacks, picnic supplies, and water to cut costs.

  • Travel with friends or family: Sharing rides, meals, and accommodation stretches your budget and makes the experience more social.

  • Use free and low-cost attractions: Hikes, beaches, markets, and scenic drives cost little but deliver big adventure. Check local visitor centres for community-led tours or low-cost guided activities.

  • Be flexible with meals: Self-catering or casual eateries near your destinations save money.

  • Check seasonal deals: Look out for weekend rates or local festivals that add extra value without extra cost.

“The sweet spot is accessible nature, short travel times, and experiences that give back, like community-guided walks and township food tours,” says Hannelie du Toit, SATSA COO and Chair of SATSA’s Adventure Chapter.

It’s a favourite for its self-drive loops, bird hides, scenic lookouts, picnic and braai areas, and even kids’ play zones, making it budget-friendly and adventure-packed.

If you’re willing to splurge, you can take your trip to the next level with a hot air balloon safari from Mankwe GAMETRACKERS or a quad bike game drive with Leap Adventures.

For a 48-hour adventure, start Day 1 with a hide-to-hide circuit drive at sunrise, then enjoy a picnic or braai at Mankwe Dam before an afternoon golden-hour drive. On Day 2, rise early for another circuit in search of elephants and lions, grab a coffee at one of the lookout points, and wrap up with a short guided activity or a stroll around nearby Sun City.
