To ease congestion around Johannesburg this Easter weekend, the JMPD has introduced key changes to some of the city’s main roads.

Easter is a period that sees a significant increase in traffic volumes, and Johannesburg, one of Africa’s leading tourist hubs, draws large crowds during this time.
Whether people are attending the Rand Show, exploring the city’s parks, enjoying Easter egg hunts, dining at popular restaurants, or visiting malls offering festive specials and activities, Johannesburg is typically buzzing with activity over the Easter weekend.
With so much happening, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) aims to ensure that movement across the city remains as smooth and safe as possible.
This time of year is often associated with a rise in road accidents, prompting authorities to implement proactive measures. To manage the expected influx of vehicles and commuters, JMPD has introduced key changes to several major routes across the city from Thursday until Saturday night.
For public transport users, particularly those travelling out of the city, designated taxi exit routes have been introduced.
One of the busiest travel routes during Easter is to Limpopo, where thousands journey to attend the annual Easter church gathering at Zion Christian Church's headquarters located 25km east of Polokwane in Limpopo. Taxis travelling to Limpopo will now operate from the corner of Wolmarans and Wanderers Streets.
Meanwhile, commuters heading towards KwaZulu-Natal will be picked up from the corner of King George and North Street, behind Bridge Mall.
Within the inner city, Delvers Street will operate as a one-way route, allowing entry from Rissik Street into the Park City public transport facilities.
In addition, several intersections will have restricted access, including:
Authorities have also urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads. Increased law enforcement will be in place, including inspections targeting drunk driving. The department announced 24-hour roadblocks across the city during the Easter long weekend.
Pedestrians have also been warned to avoid walking on or crossing freeways, as this poses serious safety risks.
Furthermore, JMPD will ramp up patrols in the Johannesburg inner city, townships, and other major transport hubs. Inspections will also be conducted at alcohol-selling outlets, with action taken against those operating without proper authorisation.
Motorists and commuters are encouraged to plan their trips in advance, stay alert, and follow all road regulations to ensure a safe and smooth Easter weekend.
