Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department has increased roadside inspections across the city.

The campaign started in June and is aimed at increasing road safety.

The department says it is the responsibility of vehicle owners and drivers to have their vehicle tested, either at a private or public vehicle testing station.

Any vehicle found to have three or more defects will be prohibited from operating on public roads.

The JMPD will inspect the following:

Wear, punctures, and uneven tread on tyres.
Functionality and unusual noises on brakes.
Functionality and unusual noises on the car.
Faulty lights. Ensuring headlights, brake lights, indicators, and hazard lights are functioning well.
Windshield wipers and washer fluid.
Faulty suspension components that affect vehicle control.

Other road safety components to check include:

- Oil Check
- Battery
- Radiator Water
- Leaking exhaust systems.

To have your car inspected at a public testing station, you would be required to produce your vehicle’s registration certificate, and your
identity document (ID). You will also be required to pay a prescribed fee and to complete the application for certification of roadworthiness (ACR) form.

The application will be processed on the same day, and a notice will be issued.
