Johannesburg has been experiencing persistent heavy rains over the past few weeks, bringing both inconvenience and concern to many residents. Floods have, in the past, destroyed many residential areas and thousands of people have lost their homes or had their cars damaged by the floods in the city. As the bustling metropolis that it is, the city has also seen commuters, families and businesses adjusting their plans and taking precautionary measures to avoid being caught off guard or negatively affected by the downpours.

Flooding hotspots

Weather forecasters have issued repeated warnings about possible flooding in parts of the city, urging the public to remain alert and exercise caution when travelling or moving through low-lying areas.

On Monday, 24 November, the Joburg Roads Agency released an updated list of flood-prone hotspots to help residents stay informed and prepared.

The identified areas include Northgate, Roodepoort and Bram Fischerville, which have shown increased vulnerability during heavy rainfall.
In addition, residents in Cosmo City, Northriding, as well as those travelling along Albertina Sisulu (Jersey–Crous), The Highway (Lelie–Westlake) and Goldman Street (Sauer–Westlake), are advised to brace themselves for the possibility of severe flooding. Motorists are encouraged to avoid these routes whenever possible, and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution.

“In the event of a flooding, or where residents are at risk, it is advisable to evacuate the area and seek a place of safety immediately,” wrote Joburg Road Agency on X.

More safety tips from Joburg Roads Agency:

  • Avoid low-lying bridges during flooding.
  • Only cross rivers at safe crossing points when it is safe to do so.
  • Keep out of open channels and rivers.
  • Never attempt to drive or run across flooding water.
  • Never underestimate flooded areas.
  • Adhere to road and bridge closures.

Residents and road users are encouraged to report incidents of flooded roads, blocked stormwater channels and any unsafe road infrastructure. With continued vigilance and cooperation, residents can help minimise risk during this period of intense rainfall.
