From Southeast Asia to Johannesburg, Mangosteen fruits have finally landed in Jozi.

The tropical fruits, which are also known as 'queen of fruits' are gaining popularity in different parts of the world because of their health benefits.

"Mangosteen contains several nutrients with antioxidant capacity, such as vitamin C and manganese. Plus, it provides xanthones — a unique type of plant compound known to have strong antioxidant properties. Several studies have shown that the antioxidant activity of xanthones may promote anti-inflammatory, anticancer, anti-aging and antidiabetic effects," states Healthline

The good news is that Joburgers can now also get to enjoy the amazing fruit.

Garden Fresh, the fruit and vegetable store in Parktown North, has the fruits in-store.

"EXCITING NEWS. After YEARS of searching Chris and I have finally got our hands on the elusive Mangosteen and we can’t wait for you to experience its one-of-a-kind, unique sweet, tropical super-fruit flavour! Dont miss out! (Limited quantities available) Jo’burg .. they’re proper!" wrote Garden Fresh on Instagram.

Time Out spoke to Chris Chadderton, the co-founder of Garden Fresh, to find out interesting facts about the fruit.

Why the decision to sell the mangosteen fruits in Johannesburg ?

Me and my partner Yorrik Lotto have been doing this [business] for over 20 years, and over the years, mangosteen is always one of those fruits that people have been asking about and we never had them. Now that we had a slide chance of getting them, we brought them in and haven't looked back. They have been amazing.

How does the fruit taste?
It's a taste between a custard apple and a litchi.

What dishes can you make with mangosteens?
They are best enjoyed on their own. You don't wanna spoil it with any other pairing.

How should they be stored?
Just keep them at room temperature.

What are the health benefits?

They are a healthy snack, packed with vitamins.

How much are the fruits selling for?

We are currently selling them for R450 per kilogram.

There you have it Joburgers, now you can have a bite of the tropical fruit while they are still in season from June to October.
