Traffic around the city might soon be a thing of the past. The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg's Transport Department, has embarked on a new project to ensure better experiences for commuters.
JDA announced on Tuesday that it is developing a Park-and-Ride (P&R) Master Plan to reduce traffic across the city. This method was usually used for concerts or sports events that attract hundreds of people, however, the city is now considering it as a permanent feature. Under the plan, private car users would park at designated areas located near public transport hubs and then complete their journeys using public transport.
The P&R would not only ease congestion but also strengthen the public transport system.
“Johannesburg's future depends on our ability to create a transport system that is efficient, accessible, and environmentally responsible," Themba Mathibe, the CEO of the JDA reportedly said.
“The Park-and-Ride Masterplan is an important step towards reducing congestion, improving commuter convenience, and ensuring that public transport becomes the preferred choice for more residents," he added.
Traffic in the city is usually badly congested during the early hours of the morning when people travel to work and from 3pm in the afternoon until around 6pm.
City of Joburg states: "Key objectives of the Park-and-Ride Masterplan include assessing the status of Park and Ride Facilities in the City of Johannesburg, by considering the following:
Quantifying the number of Park and Ride Facilities in the City of Johannesburg
Identifying locations of potential prioritised P&R locations
Establishing guidelines for selection of prioritised P&R facilities."
