The City of Johannesburg remains committed to providing free digital access and connectivity to residents and visitors.
Over the past few years, the city has been rolling out public Wi-Fi in central areas across Johannesburg.
In its latest initiative, the Gauteng Department of e-Government has announced plans to implement free Wi-Fi to hostels around the city.
Last Wednesday, the department shared images on Facebook showing MEC Bonginkosi Dhlamini meeting with leaders from various hostels in Johannesburg to discuss the rollout of Wi-Fi under the Gauteng Provincial Network (GPN) in their communities.
“This initiative aims to close the digital divide and help residents gain better access to the internet,” the department announced.
According to Egoli Jozi News, the rollout has already begun and is expected to continue until December 2025.
The project forms part of the GPN’s expansion programme, which focuses on servicing previously disadvantaged areas - including townships, informal settlements, and hostels, collectively known as TISH areas.
Some of the hostels that will benefit include Diepkloof, Mzimhlophe, Jabulani, Madala Hostel, Helen Joseph, Dobsenville, George Goge, Nobuhle, Denver, Nancefield, Alexandra, Dube, Mapetla, and Orlando West.
What this means for Joburg residents
Hostels have long served as places of refuge, offering affordable accommodation when compared to apartments and flats.
They form an important part of South Africa’s history - many residents migrated from rural areas and townships to Johannesburg in search of employment and stayed in these facilities.
Providing free internet access means residents can stay connected without bearing the high cost of data.
Digital access and connectivity are now more crucial than ever, offering people opportunities to apply for jobs, communicate, and stay informed about news and developments around the world.
This initiative positions Johannesburg as a more attractive, inclusive, and forward-thinking city.
