Running from Thursday to Saturday from 4 pm to 6 pm, this intimate early-evening ritual invites guests into the hotel's lush gardens, patio, and rooftop bar. This effortlessly chic setting feels worlds away from the city rush. It's easily one of Johannesburg's best summer sundowner experiences, and a must-do for anyone who loves great food, great drinks and great atmosphere.
For R145, your first round sets the tone: a tapas of your choice from The Pot Luck Club Joburg's new aperitivo-style menu paired with a complimentary cocktail, glass of wine or local craft beer. It's an incredible value considering the standard of food and drink. The Pot Luck Club doesn't do average.
The tapas menu is globally inspired, playful, and dangerously moreish. The Short Rib Roti is a standout, and I could easily turn this into a meal; it's rich, tender and deeply satisfying. The Beetroot Tartare, a silky, melt-in-your-mouth favourite, vanishes quickly on every table, while the Fish Tacos, Prawn Cocktail, and delicate Salmon Tartare bring bright, summery flavours that suit the season perfectly.
To drink, the hotel's bar team leans into light, refreshing flavours. The house cucumber and elderflower cocktail is the undisputed star (the mocktail is just as good); it's cool, fragrant, and the perfect sundowner. Meanwhile, the PLC Paloma was a crowd favourite on our visit. With special Sundowner pricing on all featured drinks between 4 pm and 6 pm, it's dangerously easy to settle into the mood.
Each week, a different South African wine estate is featured, offering guests the chance to savour crisp whites, breezy rosés, and chilled bubbles as the sun sets behind the trees. And if you're lucky, you'll catch one of those dramatic Highveld summer thunderstorms rolling in, lightning cracking across the sky while you're tucked safely under the patio or roof deck, cocktail in hand. It's a whole vibe.
