Uber drivers in Johannesburg have embarked on a strike, leaving commuters stranded this morning.
According to a statement by the SABC, the drivers were expected to gather in Kramerville before marching to the e-hailing company’s headquarters in Parktown.
The drivers have urged Uber users to seek alternative transport.
They are protesting over e-hailing fares and commission, citing that the e-hailing company takes 40-50% commission per trip. Meanwhile, they have to pay for petrol and insurance and still maintain and service their cars. They also have to make a living.
Drivers have reportedly said the strike will continue until their needs are met.
This is not the first time Uber drivers are protesting over commission.
In 2021, the drivers demonstrated outside Parliament, demanding that e-hailing services increase their fares and decrease the commission they take.
Videos of the strike have been circulating on social media.
