The Johannesburg Zoo is celebrating 122 years of wildlife conservation, education and family fun, and they are marking the milestone with a special birthday treat. The zoo is offering free entry to everyone born between 1 and 31 March, excluding 21 March 2026 - giving you the perfect excuse to gather your friends and family and spend your birthday surrounded by nature and some of the world's most fascinating animals.

And the celebrations don’t stop there. The zoo has also introduced an exciting R22 entry fee special on the 22nd of every month, a deal that will run until 2027. It’s an affordable way for families and friends to explore the space, even if you’re not a March baby.

Standard entry fees for the zoo are R132 for adults and R78 for children, so the specials will save Joburgers a couple of Rands.

More about the Johannesburg Zoo

Established in 1904, the Johannesburg Zoo is one of the city’s top attractions and a respected centre for animal conservation. Home to over 320 species and more than 2,000 animals, the zoo offers far more than just wildlife viewing.

Visitors can expect to see a wide variety of animals, including:

  • Birds
  • Carnivores
  • Frogs and reptiles
  • Hoofed animals
  • Primates

The zoo also features members of the Big Five, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts.

Beyond the animals, the zoo offers lush green spaces perfect for picnics, guided tours, educational programmes for schools, exhibitions, and on-site stores for snacks and lunch. With millions of trees spread across its grounds, it provides a refreshing escape from the city buzz.

The zoo is open daily, including public holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s Day and Easter, and holds international accreditation for its conservation efforts.

So whether you’re celebrating a birthday or simply looking for an affordable day out, this month offers the perfect excuse to head to the zoo.
