Johannesburg’s iconic Chancellor House, located in the heart of the CBD, is undergoing an exciting refurbishment.
The City of Joburg announced the news on Monday, 29 September.
The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) is overseeing the refurbishment. According to a statement by the City, the renovations are currently on 40% completion.
"To ensure its legacy endures, the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) is spearheading the Refurbishment of Chancellor House Project, now 40% complete," reads a statement on COJ's site.
The renovations will ensure that the historical building remains one of Johannesburg most treasured landmarks. This is the facility where from 1952 to 1956, Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo practiced law and fought for the rights of South Africans. It is South Africa's first black-owned law firm.
“Chancellor House is more than just a building – it is a living monument to the resilience and determination of leaders who fought for justice," said JDA CEO Themba Mathibe.
The changes will ensure that Johannesburg continues to shine as a tourism hub.
“As we celebrate Tourism Month, the JDA is proud to safeguard this site so it continues to inspire both locals and visitors from across the world," Themba added.
The house is located on the corner of Fox and Gerard Sekoto streets.
