Guests planning to unwind at the popular Mhulu Luxury Boutique Hotel in Midrand, Johannesburg, will now need to make alternative arrangements, after city authorities ordered the establishment to close with immediate effect.
The hotel, launched in December 2023, is known for hosting celebrities and admired for its beautiful views. It was forced to shut down following an inspection conducted by the City of Johannesburg on 02 February 2026.
According to the City of Johannesburg's website, the operation was led by Acting Regional Director Thaba Makgafela, alongside the JMPD Director Eldred Fortein for Bylaws Enforcement, and senior officials from Emergency Management Services (EMS), City Power, CRUM, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), and Johannesburg Water.
Inspectors uncovered serious contraventions of municipal bylaws. Among the findings was that the hotel lacked approved building plans.
Officials also discovered that the property relied on a borehole as its main water source, despite not having applied for municipal approval to drill it. In addition, the hotel was allegedly illegally reconnected to a Johannesburg Water meter situated outside the premises.
Authorities further revealed that the establishment had outstanding municipal debt exceeding R1.3 million.
All these findings contributed to the decision to shut it down immediately.
“This operation demonstrates Region A's unwavering commitment to enforcing City bylaws and restoring order. No business or property owner is above the law, and we will continue to act decisively against non-compliance that threatens public safety and undermines service delivery," the Acting Regional Director, Thaba Makgafela, said in a statement posted on the site.
