For centuries, art has been more than just the expression of human creativity and skill; it has been a tool used to shape culture, transform lives, and inspire hope.

Megan (Erasmus) Vuma, a choreographer based in Midrand, has been using her gift of dance to transform the community. Her passion and gift have lifted kids off the street, given them hope, and exposed them to the spotlight.

At the core of her work, Megan instils confidence and self-appreciation. She visits township schools to deliver motivational talks, guiding learners on how to use their talents to make a meaningful impact.

Time Out caught up with the local hero to speak about her inspiring work.

Let’s discuss how you are transforming the lives of children in the townships by empowering them with art. When did that dream start, and what are some of the challenges and wins you have had along your journey?

Kids and youth naturally gravitate towards music and dance, and we use these as tools to empower them, encouraging them to think beyond their circumstances. By teaching them to create with their mind and body, we help nurture young thinkers and future entrepreneurs. Many township children have incredible artistic talent, but few opportunities to develop and showcase it, and we aim to change that.

Your students have competed on global stages. What has been your proudest moment since you started the academy?

Our dance school, M.E. Dance Academy, has grown by the grace of our Almighty. Our first overseas trip was this year [2025], where we went to Croatia and participated in the World International Dance Open. My proudest moment was when we recently won the South African Dance Sport Club League for Street Dance in Gauteng! The excitement on all the dancers and parents' faces was just priceless. It brought a tear to my eye and taught them that hard work and perseverance pay off.

Many people start a business, but give up along the way. What has been your greatest motivation?

Running your own business is never easy, but I couldn’t have done it without God in my life and the unwavering support of my amazing husband.

What is your dream for the academy?

Our dream is to establish arts premises in all township schools, using creative expression as a tool to help combat drug and alcohol abuse. Financial constraints are always a challenge, but with greater resources, we could do even more for the children in our townships

What other charity work do you do in the city?

After our activations or events, any leftover food is carefully packaged and delivered to people nearby who are looking for work, ensuring it goes to those who need it most.

Let’s spotlight Johannesburg – what do you love the most about this city?

Love the diversity of Johannesburg - people from all walks of life.

Where do you go for a fun day out with your girlfriends when not working?

I go for coffee dates when I’m free, but my favourite place to eat is Daisy Dumplings in Rivonia [ Shop 15, Early Dawn Shopping Centre, Opposite News Cafe] and opposite, we get mochi from Pútí Pastry and Tea

What’s your favourite meal, and do you have a particular reason why the dish is dear to your heart?

My favourite dish is dumplings and a spicy cucumber salad! Kimchi! Delicious!

Joburg has a wide range of restaurants. Which one is your go-to for a great burger, pizza, or meaty dish?

I’m not that fond of burgers anymore! But I love seafood, so my go-to is Ocean Basket! It's the closest I’ll get to a sea here because I’m originally from Cape Town.

You are blessed with two daughters. What are your top three recommended family restaurants and kids' entertainment areas?

My 11-year-old is entering the pre-teen stage; she’s sometimes too old for certain play areas, lol. They love any restaurant that offers fun, crafty activities.

How does the city contribute to the success of your mission?

The city contributes to the success of my business through the incredible diversity of people who enrol in the dance school. We welcome students from all cultures, including across Africa and India, creating a vibrant, multicultural community. Everyone, students, parents, and staff, comes together to support the school and each other, which strengthens the experience for the kids
