Johannesburg may be a thousand kilometres from the vines, but on 20 March, the distance is set to disappear.

In a city where dinner with a view usually takes centre stage, Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff is shifting the focus to what’s in the glass. They’ve teamed up with Atlas Swift, the Franschhoek-based boutique producer that has become a quiet obsession for South African oenophiles, for a one-night-only sensory deep dive.

The philosophy: one grape, five stories

Atlas Swift isn't your typical winery. Run by husband-and-wife duo Martin and Welma Smith, the label is built on the concept of terroir.

While many winemakers blend regions to create a consistent profile, the Smiths do the opposite. They take a single cultivar, most famously Chardonnay, and harvest it from five distinct Cape regions. The result is a liquid map of South Africa ranging from the salt air and chalky precision of the Cape South Coast to the sun-warmed valley floors of Franschhoek. By keeping the winemaking process identical, you taste only the conversation between the grape and the ground.

On the menu

To match the precision of the wines, the Westcliff has enlisted Executive Chef Rudi Liebenberg. Having helmed legendary kitchens at The Mount Nelson and The Saxon, Liebenberg is a master of the "slow and storied" plate.

The menu is a heavy-hitter lineup designed to stand up to the complexity of Atlas Swift. Expect delicate crayfish followed by duck paired with earthy truffle. The main event features a lamb loin en croute with slow-braised shin and sweetbreads, followed by a mature cheddar verrine.

Meet the maker

This isn't just a meal; it’s a masterclass. Welma Smith will personally host the table, guiding guests through the specific regions chosen for the night. If you’ve ever wanted to know why a Chardonnay from a coastal breeze tastes different from one from a mountain shadow, this is your chance to ask.

“Bringing our wines from Franschhoek to share alongside Chef Rudi’s cooking feels like a natural meeting of two worlds,” says Welma Smith.

The details

In a city that loves a pop-up, this is one of the more exclusive entries on the March calendar. Places are strictly limited to keep the evening intimate.
