Gauteng’s busiest airport, OR Tambo International Airport, is getting upgrades to improve safety and enhance the user's experience.
This was announced by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) whose mission is to 'acquire, develop and manage world-class airports'.
The company says it is implementing a comprehensive infrastructure maintenance and capital expansion programme across all nine of its airports - OR Tambo, Cape Town International, King Shaka International, Bram Fischer International, Chief Dawid Stuurman International, Upington International, King Phalo Airport, George Airport and Kimberley Airport.
According to Kempton Express, OR Tambo will experience minor short-term disruptions as the airport upgrades its infrastructure. However, travellers should not worry. ACSA's Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Mpumi Mpofu, says the upgrades are scheduled for completion between late 2025 and 2027.
Some upgrades include sewerage systems, ablution facilities, and fire escapes.
Additionally, more stringent hygiene and safety procedures will be implemented in high-traffic and sensitive areas to increase security and enhance the user experience.
ACSA has also announced that one of the improvements will include Jet Fuel Infrastructure at the international airport in Kempton Park.
"The installation of a new 20-inch jet fuel feeder line and the implementation of Jet Fuel Redundancy Phase 1 will boost reliability and supply continuity.
"These projects are complemented by the replacement of backup power generators at the airport to ensure uninterrupted critical operations," reads a statement on the site.
