The Department of Home Affairs has issued a warning to the public about scammers charging for passport and smart ID services.

The Department of Home Affairs has issued an urgent warning to South Africans planning to apply for passports or smart ID cards, cautioning them against scammers who charge for appointment bookings, applications, and document collections.
The department says several fraudsters have been approaching members of the public, claiming they can secure appointments, assist with applications, and collect smart IDs or passports on their behalf - for a fee. The scammers also pretend to be working with Home Affairs.
The department stressed that booking appointments and using its official systems come at no extra cost beyond the standard application fees. Members of the public should therefore be suspicious of anyone requesting payment to fast-track or arrange appointments.
In a statement shared across its social media platforms, the department urged residents not to fall victim to these schemes. It also posted examples of fake advertisements bearing the Home Affairs logo, along with phone numbers and the name of a person claiming he could “book an appointment today.”
For many years, long queues and delays frustrated South Africans seeking identity documents. However, Home Affairs has recently introduced more efficient systems, including the e-Home Affairs portal, which allows applicants to complete forms online, make payments, and schedule appointments at participating branches or selected banks.
The department has also expanded partnerships with banks nationwide, helping to reduce waiting times and improve access to services. Last year, in November, Standard Bank announced plans to roll out additional branches where people can access Home Affairs services. Read more about it here.
