Hundreds of people lose their lives on South African roads during the festive season each year. A report by the Gauteng Roads and Transport Department recorded 18 road fatalities in the first week of December 2025 within the province alone. One of the leading causes of road accidents during this period remains drinking and driving. Between 15 December 2025 and 21 December 2025, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) reportedly arrested 227 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Road safety remains a major concern even in the first few days of the new year. From 2 January onwards, roads become increasingly busy as many people travel back to their homes or return to places of employment.

Johannesburg is not only a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world for its entertainment and sightseeing offerings, but it is also South Africa’s economic and financial hub. As a result, thousands of people continue to travel into and out of the city, increasing traffic volumes and the risk of accidents. Driving while fatigued can also contribute to mistakes on the road, or impair your judgment.

To help ensure a safe journey, motorists are encouraged to follow these road safety tips:

  • Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy. An unroadworthy vehicle not only puts your life at risk but also endangers other road users. Check your brakes, tyres, lights, and windscreen wipers before travelling. Faulty components significantly increase the risk of accidents.
  • Avoid speeding. Speed kills. Driving at high speeds reduces reaction time and increases stopping distance, making it harder to avoid collisions.
  • Obey the rules of the road. Running red lights or failing to stop at stop signs can result in serious or fatal accidents.
  • Rest when tired. Festive activities often leave motorists exhausted. Make use of garages and restaurants along major routes to stop, stretch, and get fresh air. Fatigue can cause drivers to fall asleep behind the wheel or lose control of their vehicles.
  • Avoid texting and driving. Studies show that using a mobile phone while driving increases the risk of a crash by up to four times. If necessary, use hands-free systems.

As traffic volumes remain high into the new year, responsible driving can save lives and ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safely.
