Dozens of history enthusiasts gathered at the Roodepoort Museum this week to mark a major milestone: 140 years since the discovery of gold in the area. Themed “Uncovering the Past,” the event celebrated Roodepoort’s role in one of South Africa’s most transformative periods.
While gold was officially discovered in Roodepoort by Fred Struben on 18 September 1884, the museum hosted its commemorative event on 3 June 2025. This came three months before the official anniversary and aligned with the broader history of the Witwatersrand Gold Rush, which began in June 1884 with the discovery of gold by Jan Gerrit Bantjes.
