Over the past few months, many Johannesburg restaurants have been refreshing their menus to welcome the new year and summer season. The latest spot to introduce something new is Roti & Chai, which has launched an exciting breakfast menu inspired by Indian flavours.

If you haven’t heard of the restaurant yet, don’t worry, they’re still fairly new to the local dining scene. The eatery recently opened a branch in Rosebank this January. However, the brand itself has been around since 2015 and is well known for its signature wraps.

Now the eatery is bringing its Indian-inspired dishes to Joburg diners who love spicy, flavourful dishes reminiscent of Durban’s vibrant Indian food culture. The restaurant describes its offering as authentic flavours served with warm hospitality and a vibrant atmosphere across all its branches.

The restaurant proudly states that its dishes draw inspiration from the bustling streets of Mumbai and Delhi, while also incorporating a proudly South African spirit.

One of the standout additions to the breakfast menu is the Kheema Nest Egg Paratha, a Malaysian-Indian classic reimagined by the restaurant. The dish features a golden, flaky paratha shaped into a crispy nest, cradling a sunny-side-up egg in the centre and surrounded by rich, spiced keema mince. The dish is layered with buttery textures, crunchy edges and juicy mince, topped with fresh herbs and finished with a drizzle of tandoori jam and chilli for extra flavour.

Of course, that’s not the only item worth trying. The restaurant is also known for its popular wraps, including the well-loved tandoor wraps, which come filled with chicken or lamb and fresh vegetables.

Seafood options are also available, along with vegetarian dishes such as paneer and halloumi. One standout option features basmati rice tossed with peppers, onions, and tomatoes, blended with aromatic spices, then baked in a clay handi and served with dhania raita on the side.

No visit would be complete without a cup of the restaurant’s masala chai, made with robust black tea and aromatic spices such as cardamom, cinnamon and cloves.

So, Joburgers, if you’re in or around Rosebank and looking for a new breakfast spot, whether it’s for a casual meet-up or simply to treat yourself to something different, this halal eatery might just become your next favourite morning stop.
