Discovery Vitality and Afrika Tikkun have officially kicked off their Give2Move initiative in Diepsloot, and it’s already changing lives. The campaign’s first batch of donated running shoes was handed over to young beneficiaries at Afrika Tikkun’s Wings of Life Centre on 20 June, with Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie in attendance.
Launched in February, Give2Move encourages South Africans to donate running shoes or sports footwear, new or gently worn, to help youth across the country access sport, wellness, and movement. It’s all about breaking down barriers to a more active, healthy lifestyle.
“Give2Move is about more than just shoes,” says Dr Karen Johnson, Head of Strategic Programmes and Wellness at Discovery Vitality. “It’s about restoring dignity, unlocking potential, and giving people a chance to take that first step towards better health.”
The initiative is a partnership between Discovery Vitality, Afrika Tikkun, and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, demonstrating how government, civil society, and the private sector can work together to promote physical activity and inclusion.
How to donate running shoes in South Africa
Anyone can get involved. Simply drop off new or gently worn running shoes, soccer boots or other sports footwear at:
- Discovery offices
- Virgin Active gyms
- Sportsmans Warehouse stores
- Discovery Soccer Parks
- Selected parkrun events
You can also make financial donations via Afrika Tikkun to help purchase high-demand sizes.
Schools can join and win R50,000
Schools across South Africa are also invited to participate in the #VitalityGive2Move Schools Competition, running from 1 June to 15 August. The two schools that collect the most shoes, one large and one small, will each win R50,000 to support their own wellness programmes.
This is movement with meaning, a campaign that empowers communities, one pair of shoes at a time.
