The festive season is in full swing, and Johannesburg is buzzing with exciting entertainment offerings.
On Tuesday, 16 December, Day of Reconciliation, I spent my holiday attending one of the most enjoyable and entertaining festive-season experiences right in the heart of Sandton, the Sunday Graham Beck Picnic, which was hosted at the elegant Sun Maslow Hotel. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this was no ordinary picnic. The hotel itself looked absolutely breathtaking, dressed in beautiful Christmas décor complete with twinkling lights and a grand Christmas tree that immediately set the festive mood.
As I stepped into the picnic area, just outside the hotel, the setting became even more impressive. Comfortable seating had been thoughtfully arranged, and each spot was paired with a beautifully prepared basket filled with delicious treats, ensuring guests were never left without something to nibble on. With around 50 attendees, the picnic felt intimate yet lively, creating a warm and social atmosphere.
The weather played its part perfectly as well. It was a sunny Johannesburg day with just the right breeze, making it ideal for a laid-back outdoor gathering. Guests, especially the ladies, arrived dressed to impress in stunning, colour-block outfits, adding to the event's visual appeal and fashionable energy.
One of the highlights of the picnic was the live music, which set the tone for the afternoon. I must say, it was one of the best live performances I’ve experienced in a long time. The sound was impeccable, and the singers were phenomenal. The band was led by popular guitarist, Mr Augustus.
They performed soulful love songs that created a romantic, serenading atmosphere, making this picnic perfect for couples or anyone seeking a relaxed, feel-good experience. The vibes were simply immaculate.
After a few performances, it was time to indulge in the food—and it did not disappoint. The table was beautifully set, and the spread was impressive. Hot dishes included a variety of meats, lasagna, cheese arancini, pork loin piccata, beef kebabs, and prawns. The harvest table offered a selection of breads and dips, along with potato salad, pasta salad, and a fresh Greek salad. The lasagna, in particular, stood out as a personal favourite.
Each guest also received a curated picnic basket filled with popcorn, homemade potato chips, churros, ginger cheesecake, and red velvet opera. To top it all off, guests were welcomed with a glass of wine and given a whole bottle to enjoy with their meal, featuring selections from Graham Beck, an excellent touch that elevated the entire experience. Those who don't drink alcohol were spoiled with Papillon sparkling white grape juice. I must add that I'm a huge fan!
What truly makes this picnic worthy of a Time Out recommendation is the setting and overall execution. The views were absolutely stunning, with lush greenery and the beautiful hotel backdrop creating a picture-perfect environment. The service was equally impressive, with attentive staff ensuring guests were well taken care of throughout the event.
Overall, the Sunday Society Greyhound Back Picnic delivered on every level. It was well-organised, beautifully styled, relaxed yet vibrant, and filled with great food, music, and energy. If you’re looking for a genuinely exceptional picnic experience that combines luxury, comfort, and unforgettable vibes, I highly recommend this event.
