From city streets to safari seats — the Bothongo Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve is ready to give Joburgers a sunset experience like no other.

Imagine watching the sun set while surrounded by friends of the wild. Turn that imagination into a reality. The Bothongo Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, one of our recommended must-see destinations around Johannesburg, has announced an exciting special to ensure your desire for adventure is met. The nature reserve, nestled in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, announced Sunset Safari Game Drives.

The drives take place every Saturday and Sunday evening from 17:00 to 19:00.

What will you see?

If you have never been to the Bothongo Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, prepare yourself for one of the best nature experiences. The reserve is home to more than 600 head of game and has a beautiful setting with bushes, lawns, restaurants, and other fun activities ideal for the whole family.

Some of the animals you will see are lions, white rhinos, buffaloes, cheetahs, wild dogs, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, and over 20 species of antelope.

“There is nothing quite like being in the heart of the bush as the sun sets. The golden light transforms the landscape, and the bushveld comes alive with a different energy,” field guide Didi Mahlo said in a statement released by El Broide, The Platinum Club.

“There’s something magical about watching the bush come alive as the sun sets — the calls of the night creatures, the shifting light, and the chance to see some of our most iconic wildlife preparing for evening activity. It’s a completely different perspective of the African wilderness. These drives allow our guests to experience the magic of the Highveld at its most peaceful and dramatic hour, creating memories that truly last,” Didi added.

What’s amazing about the deal is that it is ideal for the whole family — one child under 12 rides free per paying adult. There is also a play area for the young ones.

Each booking includes full-day access to the reserve, allowing visitors to enjoy a self-drive safari before their sunset adventure.

Now you have it — the ideal excuse to tag along with friends and loved ones for an experience like no other, just 40 km from Johannesburg CBD.
