Big news for Jozi! The Global Citizen NOW action summit is heading to Africa for the very first time - and Johannesburg has been chosen as the host city.

The summit will take place on November 21 at the Sandton Convention Centre, just a day before the G20 Summit, which is scheduled for November 22–23. This marks another milestone, as it will also be the first time the G20 is held in South Africa.

The event will bring together government leaders, private sector investors, and philanthropies from all over the world. It promises a powerful line-up of speakers, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, Ursula von der Leyen (President of the European Commission), and Hakainde Hichilema (President of Zambia).

Actress, humanitarian, and Global Citizen Ambassador Nomzamo Mbatha will host the summit, while The Princess of Africa, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, will also take to the stage as one of the featured speakers.

According to a statement from Global Citizen: “The campaign aims to secure commitments to provide clean energy access for 10 million households, with 4.6 million already pledged to date. Beyond this, discussions will focus on strengthening global health security, driving climate resilience, and shaping shared priorities aligned with the G20’s 2025 themes of Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability — all with the end goal of ending extreme poverty and defending the planet.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa added: "Africa’s moment is now. Our continent holds the key to a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous world. Through decisive action and global solidarity, we can accelerate Africa’s clean energy future through a just transition - creating enduring opportunities for our people and strengthening the foundations of shared progress.”

Johannesburg is no stranger to hosting global events. With its world-class infrastructure, vibrant culture, and reputation as Africa’s financial and commercial hub, it’s the perfect city for discussions that will help shape the world.
