If your idea of a perfect Freedom Day weekend involves less quiet reflection and more electrifying guitar solos in a garden, then Johannesburg’s most anticipated rock revival is calling your name.

The Hangout Fest 3 is officially returning to The German Club in Edenvale on Saturday, 25 April, and the lineup is looking like a love letter to South African music.

Since its inception, The Hangout Fest has carved out a niche for itself by ditching the sterile stadium vibe in favour of something more intimate, communal, and, let’s be honest, a bit louder.

The sound of the long weekend

The 2026 edition isn't holding back. Organisers have assembled a powerhouse roster that bridges the gap between legendary icons and the new guard of SA rock and indie.

Headlining the day are the ever-resilient Prime Circle, alongside the high-octane energy of The Dirty Skirts and the gritty, soulful blues of The Black Cat Bones. For those who prefer their melodies with a side of sunshine, Majozi and The Muffinz will provide the perfect soundtrack for an afternoon in the garden.

The full artist roll call

  • Prime Circle & The Dirty Skirts
  • Shadowclub & Hellcats (for the heavy hitters)
  • Lee Cole, Majozi, & The Muffinz
  • The Black Cat Bones, Jasper Dan, & Rambling Bones

Keeping the energy flowing between sets is none other than the "Godfather of Rock," Barney Simon, while Cath Grenfell and Michael Lesar will be behind the decks to ensure the vibe doesn't drop for a single second.

More than just a mosh pit

What makes The Hangout Fest a staple of the April calendar is the atmosphere. It’s a family-friendly affair (kids under 12 get in free!), meaning you can introduce the next generation to a proper drum fill before bedtime.

  • The Grub: The German Club will be serving up its classic hearty fare, but expect a wider festival spread including plenty of vegan and vegetarian options to keep everyone fueled.
  • The VIP Edge: If you’re past the age of "roughing it," the VIP tickets (R550) are a no-brainer. You get a dedicated bar, private toilets (a festival luxury), and actual seating, because your knees deserve a break.
  • The Commute: Don’t feel like navigating the R24? There’s a dedicated party bus running from the Randburg area, allowing you to start the festivities early and get home without the stress of driving.

The essentials

The gates swing open at 11:00, with the first band kicking off at 12:00 sharp. Given the April heat during the day, the usual rules apply: bring a hat, wear your most comfortable boots, and lashings of sunscreen.

When: Saturday, 25 April 2026

Where: The German Club, 8 Plantation Road, Edenvale

Tickets: From R400 (General) to R550 (VIP). Grab them at Tixsa.

Whether you’re there for the nostalgia of the 2000s rock scene or the fresh energy of the current lineup, The Hangout Fest 3 is shaping up to be the loudest, proudest way to celebrate your freedom this year.
