The theatre of the people has just turned 49.
The Market Theatre, situated in Newtown, Johannesburg, is celebrating close to five decades of being at the forefront of the South African theatre industry.
Many South African actors, directors, and playwrights were discovered at the iconic theatre.
It is also the place where anti-apartheid activist and the first black president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, delivered the first Bram Fischer Memorial Lecture on 9 June 1995.
Since it was founded, The Market Theatre has continued to play a vital role in presenting cutting edge work that has challenged some of the social ills that exist in the country.
It has been a place of entertainment, reflection, and unity for many South Africans.
"At 49 we acknowledge the fearless storytelling, rebellious spirit, and theatrical magic that has always been at our heart," says Artistic Director Greg Homann shares.
"On The Market’s birthday, we honour the generations of artists, audiences, and activists who have shaped us into a powerful space for truth, transformation, and imagination. Here's to the legacy we carry — and the future we continue to create," he added.
"Here’s to the journey, the people, and the powerful stories still to come," said Homann.
