The Ubuntu Concert will take place this May, honouring the art that significantly contributed to the freedom the country enjoys today.

You can’t talk about South African history without acknowledging the sacrifices made by hundreds of young people during the apartheid era- many of whom lost their lives fighting for the freedom the country enjoys today.
During those difficult years, music and poetry became powerful unifying forces. Many artists used their talents through song, dance, and spoken word to process the pain of the past while creating moments that live on today as nostalgic memories.
One of the prominent figures in the local music scene, Billy Monama, has been keeping that spirit alive through the Ubuntu Concert. This event celebrates South Africa’s rich cultural heritage and the spirit of Ubuntu.
This year, the concert returns, bringing together some of the country’s biggest musical talents for a show that aims to reignite South Africans’ love of music while reflecting on the stories that have shaped the nation’s identity.
In commemoration of 50 years since the 1976 Youth Uprising, the concert will feature a mix of emerging young performers alongside legendary artists, creating a bridge between generations.
This year’s lineup includes Lira, Zoë Modiga, Vusi Nova, Tutu Puoane and Billy Monama, among many others. Legendary guitarist Jimmy Dludlu will also appear as an honorary guest artist.
The performance will blend a variety of musical styles, including jazz, soul and African music, making it more than just a concert. It’s a reflection of the sounds and stories that make South Africa culturally unique.
The Ubuntu Concert will take place at the Joburg Theatre from 29 to 30 May, and audiences of all ages are invited to attend and celebrate the music that has shaped the nation’s story.
