If you’re hunting for a fresh change of scenery but tired of the same old city parks, it’s time to head East. While Carnival City has long been a fixture on Joburg’s parkrun map, it’s currently topping our list of local weekend essentials for 2026. It’s the perfect 'new' addition to your weekly schedule if you're looking to clock an easy, commitment-free 5km.

Taking place every Saturday at 8 am, parkrun is free, inclusive, and designed for all fitness levels. You can walk, jog, run, bring the kids, push a pram or show up with zero expectations beyond putting one foot in front of the other. It’s exactly the kind of low-pressure movement that makes fitness habits stick.

Beyond the physical benefits, parkrun is also known for its mental health boost and strong sense of community. It’s social without being intense, structured without being intimidating, and if you’re a Discovery Vitality member, the 300 points are a welcome bonus.

What to expect from Carnival City parkrun

The Carnival City parkrun is a one-lap, relatively flat course, making it especially beginner-friendly. The start and finish are located behind the casino on Century Road, providing a safe and accessible route for both walkers and runners.

It’s also a great option if you’re looking to mix up your usual parkrun rotation or explore new parts of Joburg while staying active.

How parkrun works

Getting involved is refreshingly simple:

  • Register once on the parkrun website (Discovery members can sign up via a direct link) and download your personal barcode.
  • Arrive before 8am on Saturday, scan your barcode after finishing, and you’ll receive your time and results via email.

Many Parkruns are dog-friendly, so your four-legged companion can join in too (remember a leash and poop bags). Volunteers are always welcome, and the atmosphere is famously supportive, even if you’re having a slow day.

And because this is Carnival City, there’s an easy post-parkrun treat built in: grab a coffee or breakfast from the casino food court once you’re done.

Whether you’re kickstarting a year of movement or simply looking for a new way to spend your Saturday mornings, Carnival City parkrun adds another solid, feel-good option to Joburg’s growing parkrun scene.
