Getting around Jozi has just gotten even easier.

Uber's new electric cars have officially hit the streets of Johannesburg, marking a fresh and eco-friendly chapter for e-hailing in the city.

Popular global e-hailing service, Uber, launched Uber Go Electric last week - an exciting new option featuring fully electric rides. These cars offer a much cleaner way to travel, thanks to their zero-emission design, which means every trip helps reduce the city's carbon footprint.

At the launch, 70 electric vehicles reportedly immediately began operating across Johannesburg. And according to Top Auto, Joburg can expect an additional 280 electric cars by the end of January 2026. That's a big boost for greener mobility in the city.

Why is this good news for Johannesburg?

Johannesburg has been seeking ways to adopt greener living and promote long-term sustainability. Uber's electric rides are a significant step in the right direction, offering cleaner air and a modern transportation option for everyday commuters.

More e-hailing choices are also great for a city as busy and densely populated as Jozi. Whether residents are heading to work, running errands, or navigating the buzzing entertainment scene, having more ride options helps ease congestion and gives Joburgers greater flexibility.

Uber's electric journey is only just beginning. With the first fleet already moving around Joburg and hundreds more on the way, the city is gearing up for a cleaner and brighter future of transport. It's a shift that not only supports sustainability but also provides Joburgers with more modern, efficient, and eco-conscious ways to navigate the city.

With Joburg's vibrant nightlife, concerts, events, and numerous spots to explore, Joburgers can now party, dine out, or enjoy a night in the city without worrying about being behind the wheel afterwards.

Uber Moto

Uber has also been expanding Uber Moto - its affordable motorbike ride option. The service was launched earlier this year, initially operating only in the Western Suburbs of the Johannesburg CBD. By August, it had already grown into more areas. According to News24, Uber has now expanded Moto to more than 20 areas in northern Johannesburg.

These rides offer a more affordable alternative, with prices starting at R18. One of the biggest perks is the ability to enjoy moving around the city without worrying about traffic, making trips around the city more convenient.

In November, Uber released the updated list of areas covered by Uber Moto:

Paulshof
Sunninghill
Waterfall City
Kyalami
Upper & Lower Houghton
Killarney
Norwood
Highlands North
Balfour
Waverly
Lyndhurst
Lombardy East
Bramley
Kew
Wynberg
Alexandra
Linbro Park
Sandton CBD
Parkmore
Morningside
Rivonia
Parts of Bryanston

Uber says the rides have already been well-received, and at this rate, Jozi can definitely expect more areas to be added soon.
