Johannesburg just got a little safer, and a lot more empowering. Uber's Women Drivers feature is officially live in South Africa, giving women and non-binary riders the choice to match with women drivers on the app.
It’s a move that speaks directly to Joburgers’ reality: safety and comfort are always top of mind when moving around the city. The option has been tested globally, and now, local riders can join in by simply updating their rider profile settings. From there, when you request a ride, you’ll have the option to select a woman driver if one is nearby.
And the timing couldn’t be better. With Women’s Month drawing to a close, the rollout feels like more than just a product update; it’s a powerful statement. It’s about celebrating women not just with words, but with action, creating safer spaces on the road and opening up more opportunities behind the wheel.
Beyond making trips feel more secure, the new feature is also designed to open doors for more women to join the platform as drivers. Right now, around 8% of Uber drivers in South Africa are women, a number this initiative hopes to grow by making the gig feel more accessible.
For riders, it’s about choice. For drivers, it’s about opportunity. And for Joburg, it’s another small but meaningful step in making the city more inclusive.
Whether you’re heading to a girls’ night in Rosebank, an early morning airport run, or simply want that added peace of mind, the Women Drivers option is now live. Update your app, switch on the setting, and take your next ride with confidence.
