The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has secured a top position in the latest QS World University Rankings for Sub-Saharan Africa, further cementing its status as one of the continent’s best higher institutions. The announcement was made this week by the global university ranking body.

This recognition follows another significant milestone for UJ. The university was recently ranked number one in Sub-Saharan Africa by the Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings

According to the university, the QS ranking places UJ ahead of nearly 70 universities from 21 countries evaluated in the inaugural edition of the regional assessment. The institution also earned recognition for having one of the strongest international research networks and an impressive faculty-to-student ratio.

Welcoming the news, Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi said the achievement affirms UJ’s vision of being the international university of choice.

“These rankings, including the latest one by QS, vindicates our university’s vision as the international university of choice anchored in the African continent and the global South. We have invested considerable effort, attention, and resources to build partnerships and collaborations throughout the African continent. Our university attracts and is a home to several thousand students and staff from all the regions of the continent, underscoring once again to our grounding and commitment to this continent,” Mpedi said in a statement.

He also appreciated the impact that the university is making in the continent.

Mpedi added: “Our partnerships are purposeful and impact driven. They advance joint research, doctoral mobility and innovation platforms that are contributing meaningfully to knowledge production and socio-economic progress across the continent."

“These results reflect deliberate and sustained investment in research excellence, student success, global partnerships and measurable societal impact. Guided by our Strategic Plan 2035, we are expanding our global footprint, accelerating technology driven innovation and deepening partnerships across Africa. The rankings confirm that our strategy is producing tangible results, but more importantly they affirm that UJ is actively shaping Africa’s future through knowledge, innovation and impact.”

The University of Johannesburg is not the only institution of higher learning within the city to be recognised in the rankings. The University of the Witwatersrand, also based in the city, ranked third among the top universities in the region.

Other South African universities that featured in continental rankings include Stellenbosch University, University of Pretoria, University of KwaZulu-Natal, North-West University, University of the Free State, and University of the Western Cape, alongside continental peer University of Ghana.
