South Africa’s retail industry is booming, drawing some of the world’s biggest international players. The latest to arrive is American retail giant Walmart, which is set to open its first local store before the end of the year.

Shoppers can look forward to the brand’s signature mix of affordability, variety, and quality merchandise, a shopping experience that has made Walmart a household name across the globe.

Why Joburg makes sense for Walmart's big debut

Johannesburg isn’t just South Africa’s largest city; it’s the beating heart of Africa’s economy and a place where businesses thrive. It welcomes people from across the world and is buzzing with energy, diversity, and a love for shopping. Add in world-class airports, a steady flow of international tourists, and a local crowd that embraces global trends, and it’s easy to see why Jozi is the natural launchpad for Walmart in South Africa.

What can South African consumers expect from Walmart?

According to Kath McLay, Walmart International President and CEO, Walmart’s South African stores will offer a wide range of merchandise, including fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel and technology.

For Joburgers, Walmart’s arrival is more than just another store opening; it’s a shift in the city’s shopping scene. Expect sharper prices, new product ranges, and even more choice on the shelves, while local retailers will be pushed to raise their game. The move also brings the promise of new jobs and opportunities for local suppliers, cementing Joburg’s status as a retail capital where global players like Walmart, which entered the local market through Massmart, want to be.

“We’re thrilled to introduce the iconic Walmart brand to South African associates, customers, and communities. By listening and working together, we aim to build lasting relationships and deliver a delightful shopping experience that reflects the needs and aspirations of South Africans,” says Miles Van Rensburg, Massmart president and CEO.

Van Rensburg continues, “Every rand matters when it comes to price. It is this balance and mindset on quality and Every Day Low Prices that enables us to deliver and build customer trust. We’re committed to providing an exceptional in-store experience at every customer touchpoint, from a warm welcome upon entering the store, to helpful assistance in the aisles and friendly, efficient checkout.”

The official opening dates will be announced in October, and further details about the store's location will also be released at a later date.
