In recent years, Johannesburg has quietly (and not so quietly) become one of the best cities in Africa to get your hair braided. Whether you're after intricate Fulani braids, classic cornrows, knotless box braids, or waist-length twists, the city offers a dazzling range of talent, styles, and price points.
Braiding in Johannesburg is more than just a hairstyle, it’s a cultural cornerstone, a business opportunity, and a form of self-expression that cuts across neighbourhoods, generations and budgets.
Where the magic happens
You'll find skilled stylists everywhere, from bustling taxi ranks and street-side salons in Braamfontein and Hillbrow, to upmarket braid bars in Rosebank and Sandton. In the inner city, women braid on sidewalks with the speed and skill of trained surgeons, weaving patterns so precise they might as well be architectural. Don’t let the informal setting fool you, though these stylists are artists, often trained by experience and community.
Meanwhile, the north is home to newer, Instagrammable braid studios offering everything from scalp treatments to a glass of bubbly while you wait, giving the full beauty-bar experience. From ergonomic chairs to curated playlists, and ring lights for that “just braided” selfie.
Why braiding in Johannesburg is going viral
The rise of braid content on Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest has helped push Johannesburg’s talent into the global spotlight. Combine that with a growing celebration of African identity and natural hair, and it’s no surprise that more and more people are choosing to braid, twist, or loc up, not just for the look, but for the culture.
Joburg’s reputation as a braiding destination is even drawing in international visitors. The favourable exchange rate, paired with unbeatable local skill, has made it especially appealing. TikTok creator Michelle Anita famously flew from New York to Johannesburg for her very first braid appointment in South Africa, and she’s far from the only one.
Brazilian influencer Camilla de Lucas also made a stop in Maboneng to explore Joburg’s vibrant creative scene and get her hair braided. Partnering with CURIOCITY Africa and local collective Brafrika, she immersed herself in the cultural roots of African hair traditions. For Camilla, it wasn’t just about getting a fresh look; it was about reclaiming identity and connecting with heritage through the art of braiding in a city where self-expression and Afro pride are part of everyday life.

And while international girlies are loving the cultural connection (and the prices), locals aren’t afraid to splurge for top-tier talent either. In a now-viral video, Cape Town-based content creator Lea documented her trip to Johannesburg, where she paid R5,500 for braids. The TikTok sparked a wave of commentary (some shocked at the cost, others praising the craft), but one thing was clear: Johannesburg is where the braiding elite live.
Whether it’s a street-side braid-up or a luxury salon booking, Johannesburg has earned its crown as one of the continent’s braid capitals, and people are crossing provinces (and oceans) to experience it.
