Review
Tashas has long been a favourite among Joburgers, so when its Nelson Mandela Square branch closed late last year, many were left disappointed - but also curious to see what the new space would bring. Fortunately, I had the chance to visit the revamped restaurant, and it’s safe to say: the wait was worth it.
I visited on Wednesday, 1 April, during lunchtime, and the restaurant was buzzing. Whether it was the month-end rush or Tasha’s undeniable popularity, the space was filled with diners of all ages, from families to business professionals.
From the moment I walked in, I was struck by how beautifully the restaurant is reimagined. If you’ve been to Tashas before, you’ll immediately notice the difference. The old space has been replaced with more refined, modern fixtures that elevate the entire look.
The redesign leans into earthy tones and elegant textures, creating a calm yet sophisticated setting. Despite the crowd, the atmosphere remained peaceful - a testament to the thoughtful layout and design.
Named after its founder, Natasha Sideris, Tashas continues to draw inspiration from places like Marbella in Spain, blending Mediterranean influences with local flair.
What stands out is their commitment to local craftsmanship - all the new furniture was sourced from a Cape Town-based company, adding a proudly South African touch to the globally inspired space.
The revamp also aims to position Tashas as more than just a breakfast or lunch spot. With its new lighting and ambience, it now effortlessly transitions into a dinner destination.
Let’s talk about the food, because Tashas definitely delivers.
I started with a pineapple juice with a ginger shot, perfect for the warm day (and my flu). It was refreshing, zesty, and beautifully presented.
For mains, I had the baked meat pasta, and it was a standout. Priced under R150, the portion was incredibly generous - easily shareable. The dish featured rich flavours of bacon and cream, topped off with freshly grated mozzarella and parmesan, done tableside. That extra touch made the experience feel premium and personal.
Next was the steak and fries - juicy, well-cooked, and satisfying. The fries were crisp without being oily, which is always a win.
Overall, the food was flavourful, well-portioned, and thoughtfully presented.
One of Tashas’ biggest strengths is its versatility. During my visit, I noticed:
It’s a space that adapts to every kind of diner. The new outdoor deck is also a highlight — perfect for a relaxed coffee, lunch, or even a casual afternoon catch-up.
Tashas Nelson Mandela Square is more than just a reopening; it’s a reinvention done right.
In an area filled with top-tier restaurants, Tashas holds its own. It complements the charm and energy of Nelson Mandela Square while offering a dining experience that is both stylish and satisfying.
