Best green spaces in Johannesburg

Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden

Framed by a dramatic waterfall and surrounded by sprawling lawns, Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden feels like a world away from the city. The 300-hectare garden blends manicured sections with natural veld, creating a haven for wildlife and birdlife. More than 240 species have been spotted here.

Its most famous residents are the Verreaux’s (Black) Eagles, the only known pair nesting in an urban area. Families and picnickers flock to the lawns, while walkers can meander along easy trails or tackle the more rugged Geological Trail. With a restaurant on-site and plenty of space to unwind, it’s one of Joburg’s most treasured escapes.

The Wilds Nature Reserve

Once considered one of Joburg’s forgotten spaces, The Wilds Nature Reserve has been transformed into a thriving inner-city gem. Shaded pathways, hidden lawns, and small waterfalls make it an enchanting place to escape without leaving the city. The park is dotted with sculptures and art installations, adding a creative touch to the greenery. With its winding trails and panoramic skyline views, The Wilds is ideal for quiet reflection and a scenic afternoon stroll.

Emmarentia Dam & Johannesburg Botanical Garden

A firm favourite for locals, Emmarentia offers something for everyone. The botanical gardens are filled with themed sections, including a dazzling rose garden (popular with photographers and a favourite for wedding photos).

At the same time, the dam, which sits next to the gardens, is a hotspot for canoeing, fishing, and dog walks. With rolling lawns that stretch out for picnics, joggers circling the water, and families enjoying weekend outings, this sprawling green space is one of the most vibrant lungs of the city.

Zoo Lake

A Joburg classic, Zoo Lake has been a go-to picnic spot for generations. Set around a tree-lined lake, it’s perfect for renting a rowboat, feeding the ducks, or simply lounging on the grass with friends. The park also hosts occasional markets, concerts, and community events, giving it a lively, welcoming atmosphere.

Families, joggers, and dog walkers all find their place here, while the nearby playgrounds make it ideal for little ones. With its central location, wide open lawns, and easy-going charm, Zoo Lake remains one of the most accessible and beloved green escapes in the city.

Delta Park

Covering over 100 hectares, Delta Park is one of Joburg’s largest and most versatile green spaces. Its mix of open lawns, shady groves, and wetlands makes it a haven for birdlife, with over 250 species recorded here.

The park also connects to Joburg’s Braamfontein Spruit Trail, making it popular with cyclists, runners, and dog walkers. With playgrounds for kids and a sensory trail at the Environmental Centre, Delta Park is as family-friendly as it is nature-rich.

James & Ethel Gray Park

Tucked away in Melrose, James & Ethel Gray Park is a quieter alternative to Joburg’s busier green spots. It’s known for its sweeping views of the city, with benches perfectly placed for sunset watching. Well-kept lawns and tree-lined pathways make it a favourite for picnics, joggers, and dog walkers.

Its elevated position gives it a serene atmosphere, offering one of the best vantage points to take in Johannesburg’s urban-meets-green landscape. Beyond its scenic views, the park is also a hidden hub for local wildlife, with small flocks of birds and squirrels often spotted among the trees.
