The best things to do in Linden

1. Grab a coffee at The Whippet

Housed in the historic Old Linden Hotel, The Whippet is a bright, airy café that celebrates Linden’s farming heritage while serving some of the city’s most acclaimed coffee. Recognised internationally, it was voted one of the Top 100 Best Coffee Shops in the World in Madrid, Spain, 2025. If you're stopping by, you can't go wrong with a cappuccino and a Buttermilk Chicken Benedict.

Whether you sit down and order from the delicious all-day brunch menu or grab a coffee to go, The Whippet is a must when visiting Linden.

2. Eat your way through the neighbourhood

Linden has quietly become one of Joburg’s best foodie neighbourhoods, serving up flavours from all over the world in one leafy pocket of the city. You can hop from Caribbean-inspired dishes and cocktails at Brian Lara Rum Eatery to wood-fired Italian favourites at Satori, then head to Gaucho for bold Latin American bites. Craving a little French flair? La Petit Bistro has that covered, while Parea brings the warmth of Greek dining and Banjaraa spices things up with fragrant Indian curries.

Over on 7th Street, PRON (People’s Republic of Noodles) dishes out cult-favourite Asian comfort food that’s as playful as it is delicious. And when it comes to breakfast and coffee, Linden is overflowing with charming cafés, the kind of places that make “just one cup” turn into a long, lazy brunch.

3. Try a wine tasting at Klyn Bietjie Wyn

Tucked away on Linden’s 7th Street, Klein Bietjie Wyn feels like a little hidden escape for wine lovers. Walking in, you’re instantly drawn to the relaxed vibe. The wine selection is thoughtfully curated, from crisp whites and velvety reds to sparkling bubbles that feel made for celebration.

You can pair your tasting with light bites (from the Fat Zebra's main restaurant next door) and you’ve got the perfect mix of flavour and conversation. Klein Bietjie Wyn is one of those spots you could easily miss if you blink, but it's one of the best little wine bars in the city.

4. Find your perfect match at Cheese Gourmet

If you need one reason to visit Linden, let it be Cheese Gourmet, a local institution and proudly South African treasure. This family-run shop is home to more than 180 cheeses sourced from small farms across the country, with just a handful of imports for good measure.

The friendly team knows their stuff and will happily help you find your perfect match, whether you’re into creamy bries, sharp cheddars, or something a little more adventurous. Beyond cheese, the shelves are lined with homemade rusks, jams, preserves, and beautiful sourdough bread, everything you need for a proper feast or picnic. It’s the kind of spot that reminds you why local really is lekker.

Market Kokoro is a feast for the senses. When you step inside, you're greeted by a kaleidoscope of colours and aromas. The shelves are stocked with a curated selection of authentic Asian ingredients, and they've recently introduced fresh produce to their offerings, making it easier than ever to whip up your favourite Asian dishes at home.

If you're in the mood to indulge, their hot food menu has you covered, serving up comforting classics like Korean egg bread and gimbap, perfect for a quick lunch or a leisurely snack. My favourite feature is the self-serve noodle bar, where you can select from a wide variety of instant noodle packs and use the in-store stations to prepare them.

The Linden Swimming Pool, on the corner of 11th Street and 4th Avenue, is a much-loved local hangout and one of the few indoor, heated public pools in Joburg. The half-Olympic-sized pool stays open year-round, drawing everyone from dedicated lap swimmers to families teaching little ones to float.

The domed roof keeps things cosy in winter, while a small outdoor baby pool opens up in summer for sunshine and splashing. It’s a no-frills kind of spot, affordable, welcoming, and full of local charm, whether you’re clocking laps, doing water aerobics, or just chasing that nostalgic Joburg summer feeling.

They run classes nearly every day, specialising in everything from learning the delicate art of stained glass panel making to ceramic painting.

The owner, a Linden resident, creates a space where locals regularly pop in just for a cup of their homemade cake and coffee. Whether you're interested in making your own quirky ceramic platter or simply looking for a laid-back, creative haven, this studio is where you can just be, talk, and leave with something amazing. They're quirky about hours; if the door's open and they are there, they're open! Pop by from around 8:30 am to see what's happening.

In addtion to the thrifting scene Linden is also home to a few other shoppong gems like Te Moi, Karibosana and the Big Blue Clearance store to name a few.
