Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg.

In the world of South African reality TV, few figures manage to balance the spotlight with as much grace and groundedness as Keneilwe Mpolokeng Mbobosi. Known to many as one of the standout stars of The Real City Makoti, Keneilwe has become a symbol of the modern "City Makoti", a woman effortlessly navigating the intersection of urban ambition and deep-seated traditional values.

But when she isn’t filming or sharing the complexities of her journey with viewers across the country, she is a true Joburger at heart. For Keneilwe, the city is more than just a backdrop; it’s a source of constant inspiration. "The most inspiring thing about Joburg right now," she says, "is that it is evolving and being recognised as a creative capital where artists and creatives are redefining culture in their own terms."

Whether she’s hunting for custom local designs or enjoying a quiet family day in the parks, Keneilwe’s version of "the good life" is as curated as it is authentic.

So, what does a "perfect Joburg life" look like for her? It’s a seamless blend of wellness, high fashion, and long lunches. "In a perfect Joburg life, I would wake up at 6 am and prepare to go to pilates class," she tells us, envisioning a day that moves from green smoothies to the luxury of Diamond Walk. "I would head to Diamond Walk in Sandton and get myself a cute bag from LV while waiting for my items to be packaged. I would book myself for a full spa day."

From the best peri-peri chicken livers in Waterfall to the vibrant, historic streets of Soweto, Keneilwe takes us inside her personal Jozi guidebook.

You can catch the Makotis: Anika Dambuza, Keneilwe Mofokeng, Lucy MahlanguLinda Mbunyuza and Sessy Mofokeng on The Real City Makoti on DSTV’s Mzansi Wethu Channel 163 on Fridays at 6:30 pm.

Keneilwe Mpolokeng Mbobosi's Jozi

La Parada Waterfall

My current go-to spot is La Parada Waterfall, especially for brunch or breakfast dates, because it's not too far from my house and I love the place's aesthetics. The food is great, and the service is always top-notch. They really do pay attention to detail

I am a light-meal type of woman, so I normally just go for a cappuccino, followed by their peri chicken liver meal, and a glass of Coke.

The Old Oak restaurant

My favourite hidden gems, I think more people should know about, include The Old Oak restaurant and Joy Jozi. I love them so much because they are family-friendly restaurants. I enjoy them especially for taking my stepkids out (when they visit).

These two places offer fun activities for the little ones to keep them entertained (e.g., making their own pizzas and a kiddies play area). They are a definite must-try.

Nineteen in Steyn City

When I'm in the mood for really good food, I go to Nineteen in Steyn City. Everything is 10/10, the food, service and ambience are unmatched. It's definitely one of the best places in Johannesburg right now.

Soweto

Soweto is my favourite neighbourhood to spend time in. It's known for its rich History and great activities to try, from shisanyama joints and bungee jumping to cycling and street performances, and you can tour the Nelson Mandela House. Every Kasi (township) thing you can think of can be found in Soweto, and I love that.

Ntozinhle Lifestyle

I love to shop local and support local designers and products wherever I can. Ntozinhle Lifestyle and Ditsala Designs are my favourite local designers because they both have very unique pieces, and they can also custom-make items if you'd like.

Kings Kraal

I don’t consume alcoholic beverages; I'll have non-alcoholic sparkling drinks, but I don’t like the taste. I am a Coca-Cola type of girl, and I enjoy that with some ice and a slice of lemon. However, I do enjoy a good night out.

Brees Kitchen at Kings Kraal is one of my favourite places for a night out. They have great live music and performances. The menu is African Cuisine, which just gives a homely feel.

Lesedi Cultural Village

Lesedi Cultural Village is a landmark I never get tired of. You get to learn about the different cultures in South Africa and our history as Africans. They also have cultural performances and activities for entertainment

The Lion and Safari Park is another one. It allows you to get up close with Africa’s most majestic animals. The safari guides also share fascinating facts about the animals
