Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg.

As a breakout star of The Real City Makoti, Lucy Mahlangu has become a relatable icon for the modern woman, one who balances a grounded approach to marriage with a fierce sense of independence. For Lucy, being a "city makoti" isn't about compromise; it’s about proving you can be a hardworking professional while embracing your cultural roots with dignity.

“It was important to showcase my type of marriage because most women in the cities find it hard to understand that there are different types of marriages, and either way, it can still work out,” she explains.

“Showcasing that you can stay in the city and still embrace and practice culture or tradition with dignity and pride,” she adds.

When she isn't navigating the complexities of tradition on screen, you’ll find her leaning into the "soft life," scouting out Johannesburg’s hidden spa gems or soaking up the energy of local markets. From the hustle of building a business to sipping signature cocktails at TANG, Lucy views Jozi as a land of pure opportunity.

We caught up with her to talk Limpopo retreats, favourite coffee dates, and why she believes the secret to success is simple: "Stand your ground, set your boundaries, and define your own goals."

PAUL

Paul’s restaurant is my go-to for breakfast. I love the refreshing tea options, and it’s a beautiful, coffee-date-friendly spot.

The Tasting Room

My favourite spot for bubbles is the Tasting Room. It offers wine and champagne tastings, so you can choose whether you go for bubbles, dry, or sweet wine.

Fourways Farmers Market

The Fourways Farmers Market is an experience that never gets old. It's a great way to spend a summer afternoon. Every time I go there, it's like I am there for the first time.

Sky Dining Events

Sky Dining Events is a hidden gem that I think more people should know about. It's for those who are more adventurous, but once you're up in the sky.

Ocean Basket

When I'm craving good food, I head for Ocean Basket. It is easily accessible and has great food.

Era by DJ Zinhle

Foschini, Pep Home, and Sheet Street are some of my favourite places to shop, but my favourite local designers to support are Era by DJ Zinhle. It's easy to play around with her brand and mix and match outfits for the day.

TANG

I'm a big fan of TANG restaurant. My perfect day in Joburg would be attending to my business, followed by a coffee date. I would then go to TANG restaurant and have their signature cocktail.

News Cafe

My favourite place for a night out is News Cafe. It's a classic spot for good food, good drinks and good times.
