Hey mouth-breathers, ‘Stranger Things’ is coming back to Netflix later this year for a second trip to Hawkins, Indiana. There will be more ’80s nostalgia, more mystery and more frozen toaster waffles. Want the downlow on the Upside Down? Here’s everything we know so far about the plot, the release date and the new cast members joining ‘Stranger Things 2’.

1. It’s set a year later on Halloween

Almost a year has passed since we last saw the ‘Stranger Things’ gang and it’s All Hallows’ Eve, both on-screen and off. Halloween is when the second run is going to drop onto our Netflix accounts and the boys are all dressed up for trick-or-treating in the first-look images, too. Naturally, Dustin, Lucas, Mike and Will are dressed as Ghostbusters.

2. There’s going to be a lot more Upside Down

Grab your headtorch. We’ll be spending more time in the strange alternative world that is the Upside Down. ‘The Upside Down will be more of a place. You’ll spend more time [there],’ ‘Stranger Things’ composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein have said, adding: ‘We’ll make a lot more weird music this time around.’

3. But it might be in flashbacks

Poor Will Byers was coughing slugs up into the sink when we last saw him, so we can assume he’s not entirely over his time in the Upside Down. ‘He seems to be seeing images from the Upside Down. The question is whether they’re real or not,’ says co-creator Matt Duffer. ‘It seems like he’s having some sort of post-traumatic stress disorder.’

4. Season 2 is inspired by more ’80s movies

‘Stranger Things 2’ is set in 1984 and it’s going to be inspired by ‘a lot of cinema’ from that year, specifically by everyone’s favourite fedora-wearing adventurer Indiana Jones. ‘1984 was a fucking amazing year, especially the movies that came out in the summer of 1984. It was just a great year for pop culture,’ Matt Duffer said. ‘It was an awesome year for cinema, so we’re trying, hopefully, to capture a little bit of the magic of those films. Something like “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”… I love that it gets a little darker and weirder from “Raiders”.’

Other 1984 films the Duffer brothers might be brushing up on include ‘The Karate Kid’, ‘Gremlins’, ‘The Terminator’ and ‘Ghostbusters’, which is clearly already an influence.

5. Dustin is getting a supernatural pet

There’s ‘a little creature I get to bond with’, explains Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin, adding: ‘It’s obviously not from this planet or this dimension.’

6. Will’s mum is dating

As if Joyce didn’t already have enough on her plate, Will’s super-stressed mom (Winona Ryder) is getting back on the dating scene. Her new love interest? Old high-school pal Bob, played by ‘The Goonies’ star Sean Astin. ‘She’s made this choice with Bob because she wants a good father figure in her sons’ lives,’ says Ryder.

7. Mike is mourning Eleven

And his sister Nancy is suffering too, after the death of Barb. ‘She and Mike are both the most screwed-up because they’re the ones who both lost someone. They’re both dealing with that and we see the effects,’ says Matt Duffer.

8. Barb is absolutely, definitely dead

Thinking about Barb makes our hearts hurt, especially when exec producer Shawn Levy says things like: ‘She's dead. We saw a slug coming out from her throat. There’s no coming back from that.’ He went on to suggest that being dead isn’t necessarily a barrier to the character playing a big role in the second series of the show, though. ‘I will say that [Barb’s] memory and the search for justice for her is a part of season 2.’

9. But Eleven will be back

We don’t know how, but the girl with the nosebleeds and the Eggos addiction will be back after her apparent demise at the end of season one. We’re likely to find out more about her past and backstory, but apart from that the cast and crew are keeping quiet: ‘I want people to know that she’s back and she’s a major part of the season and not know how or why,’ says Matt Duffer.

10. There are new faces in Hawkins

There’s a new doctor in town, played by Paul Reiser. Apparently there’s supposed to be a connection between him and his ‘Aliens’ character: ‘I think part of what [the Duffer brothers] were tickled by was, to whatever extent people know me from “Aliens”, they’re automatically going, “Oh this guy is no good.” I don’t know where they’re going with it but it’s a fun thing to play.’

Also new to the gang are brother-sister duo Billy and Max, played by Dacre Montgomery and Sadie Sink (pictured). Max hangs out with the boys and there might even be some flirting going on, but Billy doesn’t fit into Hawkins quite so easily…
